Human recognition of plant diseases dates back thousands of years. Ancient Roman history suggests that the Romans feared and revered Robigus as a powerful deity capable of destroying vital crops. Through annual rituals and sacrifices, they believed that it would protect their crops, reflecting strong connections between religion and farming in Roman society. Ancient farmers who relied solely on crop yields selected crops based on their disease resilience, although the underlying cause was not understood. Theophrastus, a student of Aristotle, noted some of the earliest plant diseases during the 3rd and 4th centuries B.C., which were believed to be caused by supernatural forces rather than biological agents. With the invention of the compound microscope during the Enlightenment period (18th Century), the study of plant diseases significantly increased through visualization of the pathogenic organisms. In the 1700s, researchers such as Henry-Louis DuHamel du Monceau identified certain plant diseases as the result of parasitic fungi, acknowledging that these conditions could spread through infection. With further advancement in microscopy and the development of the microscope, during the 19th Century, Heinrich Anton de Bary discovered pathogenic microbes (not supernatural forces) as the causal agent of plant diseases. Early disease management was based on cultural methods, and later, chemical methods were introduced. Bordeaux mixture (copper sulfate and lime) was the first effective fungicide to be used. Yet, with the widespread use of synthetic fungicides in the 20th century, many pathogens began to develop resistance, emphasizing the importance of exploring alternative disease control methods.
