Abstract

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L., 2n=14) is an important cereal crop belonging to the grass family and is predominantly self-pollinated. It ranks among the major global cereals alongside rice, wheat, and maize. In India, it is the second most important rabi cereal after wheat and is well adapted to adverse conditions such as drought, salinity, and alkalinity. Originating from the Near East region, barley has wide distribution across temperate and subtropical areas. It holds significant economic importance as food, feed, and for malting and brewing industries. Breeding objectives focus on improving yield, stress tolerance, and quality traits, using methods such as selection, hybridization, and mutation breeding.
