Abstract

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) stands as a vital oilseed crop on a global scale, holding the third position in the hierarchy of edible oil origins, following soybean and palm oil. This crop is highly esteemed for producing a premium, cholesterol-free oil that is abundant in unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic and linoleic acids, which offer various nutritional and health advantages. Moreover, sunflower oil serves multiple industrial purposes, acting as a sustainable alternative to mineral oils in fuel applications and hydraulic systems. The plant thrives in diverse agricultural climates and exhibits beneficial characteristics, including a short growth cycle, resistance to light variations, tolerance to drought, and a high seed yield ratio. In India, the area dedicated to sunflower farming has significantly grown, particularly in regions like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. Furthermore, sunflowers display heliotropic behavior in their initial growth phases, optimizing light absorption. Its by-products, including stalks, contribute positively to composting, enhancing its value in agriculture. Given its substantial oil yield, versatility, and economic significance, the sunflower is essential in promoting edible oil availability and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices.
